The Meaning and Significance Of Writing

As we all are fully aware, writing is a powerful tool to inspire, persuade and even change the world. It is a skill of representing words in a way that they make sense when they’re read. While every living being might claim to have this skill, not everyone possesses the art of representing wisdom as effectively as some unique souls do.

The aim of writing anything should always be to make the reader aware of the information that is meant to be conveyed and skillful writing doesn’t always imply using fancy words or phrases. It simply involves using understandable words to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.

If we dive back into our history, we will realize how lucky we’ve been in terms of gaining such beautiful and impactful writers who left a huge impression on the world by their writings and compilations. Even in today’s time, we can easily trace so many talented authors and writers who hold the power of using writing as a practice to reform world views.

Celebrated Writers Who Believed In The Power Of Writing

Anne Frank, a renowned diarist is a classic example of someone who educated the world on the power of writing by highlighting the dark side of history. The insights in her diary are labeled as one of the most powerful work written till date because of the impact her words left on the readers mind. Irrespective of the era you read it in, her words will transport you to the time of the World War II where she and her family were hiding to avoid the Nazis. As a reader, you will certainly feel the same pain and terror that she faced while writing what she wrote.

Carl Sagan, the great American astronomer and scientist, in his famous book Cosmos (1980) stated: “Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another.”

Dr. Sagan’s beautiful quote reveals such a persuasive aspect of writing where a connection amongst the different human generations, races, nationalities and cultures is highlighted which otherwise remain separated by the vast expanses of time and space. Just like Dr. Sagan, many writers in the past have highlighted striking revelations on the power of writing. I’m quoting some of them below for you to acknowledge and appreciate.

According to James W. Pennebakerr, “writing about a trauma or a painful event allows people to resolve and deal with a situation in an efficient way”

Francis Bacon, (1561-1626), also expressed his view on writing as well as reading in the following words: “Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man; and, therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confers little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.”

Throughout the human existence, writing has played a large impact on our evolution and has grown exponentially in the modern era. According to a research study, it is said that, one of the most important developments of the modern era, according to Philippe Aries, was the advent of written culture in Western society” (Chartier, 1989).

The influence of writing has successively remained enormous and perhaps its biggest strength is its potential to impress people with the use of structured words and sentences. In fact, I strongly feel that written content is louder and more impactful in comparison to spoken words. Why so? I think it’s because words are more direct when written. Spoken words on the other hand are influenced by many variables, such as the communicator’s body language, tone of voice, gestures, pauses, etc.

The Role Of Writing In Crafting Your Best Life

Writing undeniably has a power linked with it; something that cannot be replaced by any other skill or form. Let us now highlight the major role it plays in our lives:

1. Powerful tool of self-expression– With writing, one can easily share their outlook, thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences with the world. Every soul has the right to write freely without any limitation.

While every person has their unique style of expression- the best way to start is by following a daily journal where you can write about your day, how it went, how you felt and how can you make the next day better. Trust me, it’s the best way to track self-growth.

2. Honest and fair-minded– Ask a person to share honest feedback with you regarding a subject; tell them to do it through writing. What comes next will be an authentic opinion that will come from their mind and not the brain. There are high chances that this feedback will be an open and unfiltered view of what you’d asked for.

Do you think the same person would’ve shared the same feedback with you if you would’ve had a verbal conversation? No, right? This is exactly where the power of writing lies. It brings out the finest potential of a person without even them realizing about it.

3. Brings a social change– An impactful piece of writing has the power to reform even the toughest of views and assessments with the help of which you can challenge old beliefs and highlight new ideologies- something that gets pushed under the carpet if done orally.

Thanks to the digital world, many new-age writers and bloggers freely share their views on topics that were once banished and not spoken of. Of course, one has to be practical and humble when voicing their side specially when their questioning someone else’s views and a truly skilled writer should always be unbiased yet brave with his choice of words and expression.

4. Impactful– Writing is the most powerful way to change viewpoints, share outlook and convey thoughts and feelings. It creates a long-lasting impact on the minds of even the most rigid people. Isn’t this why we still remember some writers with respect and admiration, even long after they’ve left this world?

5. Carries traditions and philosophy’s of famous souls– Words are the only way we can connect to souls even after their passing in this life. Think about it, we can enter into someone’s mind by just having a conversation with them.

Writing texts, reading novels or just communicating with someone verbally- all modes function on words. What a beautiful feeling it brings to realize that whatever we write today will remain fresh in terms of perspective even after hundreds of years.

6. Clear enduring and direct message– Writing is a direct way of putting across an opinion which otherwise might get rejected. For instance, I am writing this post right now without any interruption but I doubt if I would’ve conveyed the meaning as freely if I was speaking to someone about it because people tend to cut the conversation in between to add their beliefs which breaks the flow of the whole exchange of communication.

7. Gives more confidence and conscious efforts– Writing involves constant awareness and conscious efforts. It requires focused attention and mindfulness. When I write, I do it with all my dedication which not only builds my confidence but also encourages me to delve deeper into the subject. It brings such a sense of relief to give an outlet to your thoughts and writing is the best way to bare yourself to the world.

8. Free to express in own style– There are certain rules to writing which are very basic yet necessary. These rules spin around using appropriate grammar and assembling correct structure patterns to add meaning to the language.

Apart from this, every person is open to build their own style of writing and apply it as long as it doesn’t hurt the sentiments of the nation or other people’s feelings. Writing should bring a smile on your face and on the face of the person reading it; it should never trigger the wrong side of anyone.

Benefits Of Writing

1. It is impactful- Writing is more powerful than your mind can ever imagine. It not only creates an impact on the readers mind but it also opens a window for the world to view your true-self.

2. Helps in cultivating a clearer mind and understanding- Writing something whether digital or on a piece of paper brings clarity and keeps you focused on your aim. It helps you to understand fresher perspectives towards even the littlest of details.

3. Improves communication- For me, writing has always been the best form of communication. Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, it is a common medium that helps everyone express their thoughts and standpoints more comfortably.

4. Enhances creativity and wellness Writing is not a mechanical process or something that you simply ‘do’. It’s an act of self-respect where you acknowledge your existence and abilities and bring them forth with full confidence for the world to view. It enhances the creativity within because with writing comes liberty and when you get this freedom, there is nothing that can stop your mind to come up with distinctive ideas and talents.

5. Relieves mental stress- It is a well-known fact that writing is a reflection of your mind. Try it once! Take a pen and paper and just write whatever comes to your mind. Do it without any inhibitions and I promise you, you will sleep peacefully after that.

Sometimes your mind will shock you with what you’ll jot on that paper but undeniably, you will feel lighter and on some days you will come up with ideas that’ll help you resolve issues in your life. Once you get into this habit of journaling and expressing whatever you feel, you will start enjoying the process and never look back.

6. Writing improves perspective- It unlocks limitless possibilities in every area of life and has the power to open new doors within an existing realm- that’s the true strength it holds!

7. It sharpens the memory by always keeping the mind active and running for new ideas to present. Whenever we write, the brain is signalled to stay active which stimulates neurons and helps our memory to grow sharper and more responsive.

8. Writing helps in improving communication by bestowing the right to express freely. There are no guidelines or age limits to it. Even a small kid of 5 years can write impactful dialogues. Personally, I have come across so many poems and letters written by kids that are pure and meaningful. Writing is an endless activity, the more you’ll indulge in it, the higher you’ll grow your intellect and wisdom.

9. It helps to build vocabulary. The more you write, the more you will improve your ability and grow in the field of writing. It is a way of gaining awareness of reality and has the power to break shackles of illusion, highlighting both- the bliss as well as the ugly truths that lie hidden in the society.

10. Through writing we get to learn more and more. This learning is so wide that it covers a wide range of discoveries- both personal and professional. The more we read, the more we open our mind to newer perspectives as each piece of writing is different to the other, bringing an opportunity to address, appreciate and value all kind of perceptions.

7 Steps To Start Your Writing Journey

1. Explore a Clear Intention
Identify why you want to write. Do you want to gain clarity for your professional goals, seek personal growth, overcome creativity blocks or share your personal thoughts with the world? A clear intention is the first step in starting your writing journey.

2. Set Goals
Set small, achievable writing goals. For instance, if you’re planning to write a novel, start with the goal of completing a paragraph, a page or a short story each week. This will keep you motivated and help you track progress. If you want to write for self-reflection then start with the basic details of how your day went and then plan your next day and coming week accordingly.

3. Create a Routine
Dedicate a specific time each day to write, even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes. Consistency will help you develop your skills over time and turn writing into a habit. I remember when I first decided to write, I bought a journal to signal to my mind that I was ready to make this a part of my routine. Gradually, I began enjoying filling my journal and even added a few extra columns. Now, it’s an integral part of my life, helping me plan my day in advance and function more effectively.

4. Write Freely, No Judgement
Start by writing whatever comes to mind. Let the piece of paper in front of you act as a medium for a mind-dump exercise. Do not overthink, just allow your thoughts to flow naturally. Don’t worry about perfection- focus solely on expressing yourself. Take your time and don’t forget to smile while doing so. Remember, you’re giving your mind an outlet to unwind and relax.

5. Read Regularly
Read books, articles and blogs to expose yourself to different writing styles and broaden your vocabulary. Inspiration and ideas often come from what you read. It’s essential to fill your day with positive content and what better way to expand your outlook than by opening your mind to other viewpoints?

6. Revise and Seek Feedback
If you’re aiming to become a successful writer or author, it’s best to revise your work without hesitation. Share it with trusted friends or fellow writers for feedback and growth. After all, you’re creating your work to present it to the world, and your friends are part of your potential audience as well as your true cheerleaders. Constructive criticism always helps refine your craft.

7. Celebrate Your Progress
Writing is a journey—let it gradually become a part of your lifestyle. Take time regularly to celebrate milestones, whether it’s completing your first draft or consistently filling your journal every day for a week. Acknowledge your efforts to stay motivated. These small achievements are the stepping stones to reaching and living your best life.

When you write, you transform the scattered thoughts in your mind into a clear structure and a plan for the future. Seeing your ideas on paper allows you to filter out unnecessary details and focus on all the desires and needs that truly matter to you. The more you write, the easier it becomes to track your progress and align your actions to manifest your wishes into reality.

Role Of Writing In Manifestation

I cannot even start to explain what a beautiful and impactful role writing holds when it comes to manifesting. As we all are aware, manifestation begins by a thought and when we put that thought on a piece of paper or on a digital screen that is when miracles start to happen.

Writing goals helps to manifest them. It’s like bringing our desires into reality. When we write, we involve all our focused energy into acknowledging what our soul truly wants. It’s like setting a blueprint for our future self and writing is a way to reaffirm that desire by creating a neurological pattern in the brain which then signals our body to work in the direction of our anticipated goals. It keeps us motivated and prospering.

In manifestation, writing is used both for attracting as well as releasing. It is a belief that writing in itself is a very powerful tool and when we write physically with a pen/pencil/tool we add our individual, unique energy to it which automatically multiples the manifestation power and magnifies our desire abundantly.

When we follow this ritual religiously, day-after-day we will notice significant changes happening at a much faster speed. Sometimes our wishes will take hardly a matter of days to manifest. Just remember to pair writing with faith and confidence.

As a matter of fact, many therapists advice a very beautiful letting go ritual where they ask their clients to grab a piece of paper and write a list of points that bother or cause a sense of discomfort in them. It can be a childhood memory, a heartbreak, a tainted friendship, family issues, body issues, low confidence or even nightmares. Based on what the client writes, the therapist can easily track down the triggers and traumas that need to be healed for that particular person.

There’s also a letting go ritual similar to this, where on a full moon night you write all your troubles and worries (things that you feel are blocking your different areas of life) and burn that paper believing that the moon will take care of everything. It’s a beautiful way to connect with the moon and nature and letting go of all the unwanted energy.

Same goes for affirmations. To write an affirmation and to say it verbally has two different effects. I’m not denying that verbal communication has its own significant impact but writing affirmations and then saying them aloud is like a re-affirmation.

Manifestation and writing go hand-in-hand. Let me explain this with an example, let’s say you want to manifest a car. How will you start? Will you just begin by repeating your affirmations that you’ve bought your dream car and wait for it to come true or will you as an alternative take a paper and write what you want with the details of your wish coming true- like the color of the car, the interiors, the features, the model, the price and then link affirmations surrounding it. Isn’t this a clearer way to understand and bring your desire into life?

When you prepare a clear idea in your head, your mind will signal the body to follow it with the exact feelings and emotions that’ll justify it. All this not only boosts your manifestation but also shifts your current reality into your desired reality in no time. When you work towards manifestation with transparent steps, your desire gets attracted to you effortlessly.

I am a huge admirer of people who shower immense love towards the art of writing. I love how such a simple act of writing can create drastic impact on people’s lives.

As a kid, I loved making handmade cards for relatives and family members and I used to specially find happy quotes to write inside the card because I knew the importance it added to it. A few months ago, one of my cousins shared a card I had made when I was 7 or 8. We laughed and discussed how the message inside was both cute and meaningful- something I had randomly selected at that age, not realizing how much it would resonate as we grew older. While I can’t recall where I copied that message from or what inspired me to write it, I do realize how my love for writing has beautifully evolved over the years.

Even now, as I write this post, I hope my words resonate with you. I also wish that, like me, you discover the magic of writing and welcome it into your daily life to manifest everything your heart and soul desire!
